N Silvia Pastel Landscape Artist
Pastel landscape artist Nancy Silvia was born near the ocean in Connecticut. She recalls the horizon line as her first visual memory, and Marine paintings as a first artistic influence. Working in both pastels and oil, she paints diverse landscape subjects focusing particularly on sky and the effects of light and weather.
Nancy earned a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Yale University. Professional memberships include American Society of Marine Artists, Pastel Society of America, Pastel Society of New Mexico, and Plein Air Painters of New Mexico. She has been awarded residency grants at Ucross Foundation in Wyoming and The Ragdale Foundation in Illinois. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums and is included in public and private collections in both the USA and Japan. Nancy now lives in Santa Fe, NM
Pastel landscape art is complex and engages my interest across a range of aesthetic and spiritual concerns. The beauty of nature is always a challenge for the artist to capture. Rather, the artist can only convey their own individual reaction to the seen world and create a poem to the places observed. Often the place is not "real" at all, but a memory or composite that evokes a place. The artist's skills, temperment, and observations, in partnership with abstract pictorial composition, result in a meaningful landscape painting.
